5 Steps To Create The

perfect Entryway

Entryways are essential. Whether you’re in an apartment, house, or rental – the entryway is the first impression of your home. They’re more than just the place where you hang your hat, or kick off your shoes after a long day. A great entryway should not only be functional for everyday life, but it gives you an opportunity to show your personality and say a little something about the people who live here.
They’re usually one of the most overlooked spaces, but can be a great chance to draw your guests in with a preview of what they’ll find in the rest of your home. Entryways set the tone.

Step #1: define the space

As you step into your home, search for a wall that can serve as a focal point and a convenient landing spot. Ideally, you’ll want a wall that’s long enough for a bench and for storing boots, purses, backpacks, jackets, umbrellas, and anything else you bring in and out of your home on a daily basis. This entryway allows you to make the transition while keeping your belongings organized and visually appealing. Once you’ve determined the right spot, define the space. Here are a few different ways to do this
I’m a HUGE fanatic about peel and stick wallpaper. It can instantly transform a space and is so easy to do. Its as easy to put up as it is to take down. I put wax paper on the back of mine when I moved out and reapplied it in my new place! Its perfect for renters or homeowners that like to change their style up every few years. Plus the options out there now are endless, making it easy to find something that shows off your personal style and your unique personality. Check out how I used peel and stick wallpaper to create affordable large scale art in my dining-office!

Peel and Stick Wallpaper

When selecting wallpaper, it's important to determine if it's peel-and-stick or permanent. Permanent wallpaper will come pre-pasted or require you to purchase and apply glue. It's not overly complicated, but it will require some additional tools to install. Removing permanent wallpaper can be a huge pain, and it will damage the paper and may also damage the wall. Personally, I'm not a fan.

An alternative way to define the entryway space is by utilizing paint. Paint also has limitless possibilities and is the most cost-effective means of achieving a significant transformation. I have another short video out about creating a board and batten wall with no tools- just paint. While I’ve done a few board and batten walls, they are a LOT of work and require a lot of tools. In this video I’ll show you how to get the look the easy way. There’s no sawing wood, sanding, nailing, caulking, etc… they’re no tools needed at all… just using paint.

Molding: When defining the entryway space, it's not necessary to extend the paint or wallpaper all the way up to the ceiling. You can easily terminate it at any point and complete it with molding. Alternatively, paint the molding the same color and allow it to establish the space's boundaries. In another video tutorial, I'll demonstrate how to utilize wood molding to create a border, which requires only a few tools. Regardless of whether you choose wallpaper or paint, this technique can greatly enhance the space's overall appearance.

washi tape

Washi Tape is not only decorative, you can reposition and remove it like most peel and stick wallpaper without leaving any damage or residue. Like wallpaper it comes in a vast range of one-of-a-kind patterns, colors, and designs. You can use it on almost any surface and it works great on walls. I've used gold washi tape to create a striped accent wall in a rental when I didnt want to have to re-paint. Bonus: the whole wall cost me $8 and was had more of a gold metal shimmer than paint ever would!
If wallpaper is out of the budget, I have a cheat for you: decals! You can stick on a pattern or even stencil one on in paint! Another fun way to incorporate individual pieces to create an accent wall is with self-adhesive mirror sheets or mirror tiles. While they are not as reflective as a glass mirror, they are not as fragile and a much safer option since they're usually shatter resistant. They will still reflect the light beautifully and brighten the space. Peel and stick mirror tiles come in all shapes and sizes and provide lots of opportunity for creativity. Mirrors are great in the entryway so that you can check yourself out on the way out the door!
